As in Bonn the morning before I was very pleasantly surprised by the number of cyclists in/near the town centre. In principle the cycling infrastructure is pretty good in Cologne, apart from the traffic light phasing.
There had been a thunderstorm with rain during the night, which made the air really humid. Luckily we were cycling mainly on shaded paths again. We also cycled past a huge Ford factory, no surprise, that the cycling paths here were not particularly good.
Today we crossed over to the other side of the Rhine at Leverkusen- totally different from the route that was planned. What a construction site! But cyclists were always considered.
We had a break in Monheim, at the edge of a really nice square.
Some of the art in the public space is good as well, like this roundabout/turntable.
And we saw ‘Gänseliesl’ in a variety of different formats.
We then concentrated on getting to Düsseldorf, to arrive at our air-conditioned room before it hit 32°C. After our siesta we went along the Kö, the famous shopping street here, and ended up in the most amazing Edeka either of us had ever seen! There was a Champagne lounge, a Mozzarella bar, a Lindt hub, and many more luxury bars, where one could sit and eat/drink expensive stuff in the middle of the basement floor of this supermarket. To find the things we wanted we had to ask every time, the layout did not seem to be logical.
