Arrived home and watched the news: fire near Düren with evacuations, just a few km from where we cycled; Rhine no longer passable for ships at Kaub, which we cycled past on our first day. Also: we cycled through 35°C, not at all pleasant. We had to change our plans almost everyday on this tour due to climate change, not something we had ever needed to do before.
The day started with a very relaxed breakfast in the garden of the hotel, before we headed down from the Taunus with good views of Frankfurt , the Main valley and the Odenwald on the other side.
We went through a huge country park that we had not known about, including a gravel pit that had been re-naturalised. We even spotted der Grazie there, not at all afraid of anything.
The Rheingau starts here, this is apparently where the finest Riesling is grown. The Flörsheim Warte has a beer-/wine- garden, which had unfortunately not opened, yet.
In between a lot of roads we found a bit of archaeology, a lime kiln, parts of which had been in use since Roman times.
And then we were down at the Main, had lunch in Köstheim, crossed the Rhine and cycled home via our local supermarket to shop for a healthy dinner.
