Kampen – Coevorden, 68km (27.3.24)

The wind was no issue today, but it rained on and off. Overijssel is beautiful to cycle through. I especially liked the bits through the woods.

We came across the site of an old work camp that was established in 1930 to house the unemployed who were planting the forest, helping the farmers, building roads, etc. For three months it was used to collect Jews who were then sent off to concentration camps.

After having been enamoured by the bird life the last few days, birdspotting got me over the dyke, today was great again. Three inhabited stork’s nests within a few hundred metres of each other!

Coevorden is also a very interesting place, it was at the centre of a lot of armed conflict, therefore the history is fairly military.
