This is a beautiful stretch along the Main on a separate bike path, very pleasant.

The first look of Marienberg frightened me, 150m above the Main, very steep. But luckily there is a quite rideable alternative ’round the back’.

The castle is undergoing a lot of construction work at the moment, nevertheless we had a guided tour and learnt a lot about it’s history. The castle museum also harbours a wealth of information, including a special exhibition on the peasants’ war.

The descent to the station was quite refreshing in this heat. On the train we then met a policeman who had cycled and camped from Vienna to Passau and was now returning to Ingelheim- small world.
