Sittard – Aachen, 66km (7.8.26)

The border today was interesting. Mostly it wasn’t marked, but the European signs did occur every now and again.

The border also runs in streams, very picturesque.

There were border stones and bunkers.

Very subtle: the surfacing of the bike path changed.

And my favourite: through towns, in one case actually along the middle of the road.  So houses, bus stops, etc. on one side are in the Netherlands,  the ones opposite in Germany.

Today was also markedly hillier than so far. We started with the highest point in the Selfkant,  but found out that was only the beginning. Over 450m altitude climbed in the end – not bad.

We found a really nice place for lunch, the abbey of Rolduc.  Of course they also had a brewery,  so I bought a bottle for the evening. Mmh. Phil and I shared a ‘borrel plank’ another new culinary experience for us.

The undoubted highlight was seeing Aachen cathedral again, especially the inside. Spectacular!

Our bikes are in a conference room for the night.
